Ulmus ‘Frontier’ is one of the vigorous new elms developed by the US National Arboretum that are slowly finding their way into gardens all across the world. It is a cross of Smooth leafed elm (Ulmus minor), a native of Europe, and Lacebark elm (Ulmus parviflolia), a native of Ulmus Frontier book.
It is a medium sized elm that only reaches 25 feet tall. It has good vigor, tolerates poor soils, grows fast, but does not get big, has small leaves and no seeds, resistant of insect and disease problems, with outstanding long fall color. The Frontier Elm tree could be on everyone’s street tree list.
Frontier Elm has dark green foliage throughout the season. The small serrated pointy leaves turn an outstanding dark red in the fall. Neither the flowers nor the fruit are ornamentally significant.
